Top Hat Hurdles: Overcoming Ascot’s Fashionable Obstacle
Ascot, a legacy of elegance and horse racing in the picturesque Berkshire countryside, boasts a storied history that dates back over 300 years. From its humble beginnings in 1711 to becoming a global icon of horseracing, Ascot has continuously evolved, captivating spectators with its regal atmosphere and heart-pounding races.
In the early days of Ascot’s existence, an unforeseen challenge emerged: top hats! As the fashion of the times, these tall headpieces became increasingly popular among racegoers. However, their height posed a unique problem: obstructing the view of those seated behind. The racecourse needed to ensure everyone could witness the exhilarating races without compromising their fashion choices.
Fast forward to the 21st century and recognising the need for a modern racecourse with modern spectators, Ascot Racecourse underwent a major renovation with the goal of becoming the best racecourse in the world. Completed in 2006, there was one flaw in what is an excellent design – the rake of the terrace risers didn’t allow for the dress code of Royal Ascot and its top hats. The team then turned to the expertise of SPS Technology and the architectural versatility of SPS, in what become the first SPS Stadia + Arenas System project in the UK. Together, the talented teams embarked on an ambitious grandstand terrace redevelopment project that would revolutionise the viewing opportunities at Ascot.
