Permanent, Class-Approved Structural Steel Repair Method

SPS is currently the only thermoset solution being used in the maritime industry. With approved hot and cold work installation methods, SPS has been used to efficiently reinstate bottom and side shell structures, decks, tank tops and bulkheads, and to repair vessel cracks. SPS Technology has an extensive, proven history of repairs to cruise ships, bulk carriers, tankers, Ro-Ros, general cargo ships, dredgers, barges, LNG and LPG carriers, ice breakers and many other types of vessel.

SPS repairs are more sustainable and reduce costs by incorporating the existing corroded plating, thereby using less steel in comparison with conventional steel renewal. The savings are greatly enhanced with the further consideration of charter or off-hire, as an SPS repair is up to four times faster.

We are proud to have highly experienced SPS Technology Network Partners globally who can advise on repairs and provide up-to-date information about classification society approvals using SPS.

Repairs using SPS provide many benefits:

  • prevents damage including crack initiation;
  • can be undertaken in restricted or limited access areas;
  • can be undertaken without removing insulation and service runs;
  • reduces costly downtime and schedule disruption;
  • minimises project risk and lost time incidents (LTIs);
  • can be carried out while the vessel is in-service, eliminating the need for drydocking.

SPS structural composites can bring added value in Special Applications such as: citadel hardening, dropped object protection, and impact protection as well as repairs to port infrastructure, including link-span bridges.

We meet international standards

SPS is approved by all major classification societies, including but not limited to, ABS, Lloyd’s Register, DNV and Bureau Veritas. Guidelines and Rules have been published by the majority of the International Association of Classification Societies Members (IACS Members) for SPS uses in ship construction and repair.

As a guideline to shipowners, ship managers, shipyards and surveyors, our Surveyor’s Pack is available for download. This pack provides background information on our technical expertise guiding your team to meet the requirements of any type new build, maintenance or repair project.

Ultimately, the integrity of the cargo and the safety of the crew and environment — coupled with the lifespan of the vessel — are the primary concerns of any vessel owner or operator. SPS was developed with maritime and offshore applications specifically in mind. SPS Technology’s steel-elastomer-steel thermoset structural composite is the solution to repairs and upgrades of any type of vessel, as well as offering advanced solutions to fire, chemical and threat protection.

Safety of the ship, passengers and crew are maintained.  Ships are safe, environmentally friendly and remain intact throughout their life.
